The redevelopment involved repositioning approximately 320,000 cobblestones and 80,000 stone slabs, preserving the historical aesthetics of the square. Special attention was given to the pavement, which draws inspiration from the polychrome Cosmatesque decorations found inside the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, visually linking the square to the sacred building.
Modern Features: Fountains and Lighting
One of the most notable additions is the twelve flush fountains, operating 24/7 with recycled water. These fountains not only enhance the beauty of the square but also help mitigate urban heat islands. The lighting system was designed to highlight both the fountains and the surrounding architectural elements, creating a stunning nighttime ambiance.
Sustainability and Accessibility
The project placed a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability. Green spaces have been expanded and equipped with an automated irrigation system, while the new paving materials were selected for their durability and low environmental impact.
