How to access St. Peter’s Basilica

Although the main entrance to the Basilica is free, some attractions inside require the purchase of tickets to access, these are:

  1. the dome
  2. Museum of the Sacristy and the Treasury
  3. Vatican necropolis

Access to the basilica is from Piazza San Pietro, on the northern side. To enter you will have to cross the famous colonnade of Piazza San Pietro (one of the best squares in Rome) and, after passing the controls, get in line. It can take up to 2-3 hours to enter St. Peter’s Basilica at peak times. To avoid queuing you can buy tickets with a guided tour of the Basilica and you will be able to enter in less time! The opening hours of the church are, with the exception of religious holidays, from 9:00 to 17:00. Also remember that to enter you must respect a dress code that includes covered shoulders and knees 🙂
